How To Beat The SAHM Blues

Being a SAHM can be incredibly lonely and isolating, especially if you have an infant or toddler. This is also true even if you have school age kids. I have been a SAHM since my middle child was 7 months (I did work briefly before having my third).

Being able to stay at home with your children should be a luxury, right?! Then how come a lot of SAHM suffer from depression? A SAHM works 24/7. We don’t get breaks or time to ourselves. So how can we beat these SAHM blues? Well, I have come up with a list to help you do just that!

How to Beat the SAHM Blues

  • Find a mommy and me group in your area

This is a great way to beat the SAHM blues! A mommy and me group not only benefits you, but it also benefits your child! You are able to interact with other adults (something us SAHM’s crave!) and your little one gets to interact with children of their own age. This will also help your little one with their social development. Check your area (either your town or county) and see if their are any mommy and me groups that you could join. Some groups even do little day trips as well as weekly get togethers!

  • Check your local library for story times

Most libraries have designated story times for different ages. My library has a story time for infants on Friday mornings and one for toddlers on Thursdays! Check to see what type of story times your local library offers! This will help you make new mommy friends in the area and allow your child to learn with other children his/her age.

  • Take your child to the park

Taking your child to the park (or just getting outside on a nice day) is a great way to beat those SAHM blues. Hopefully, there will be other moms and children at the park as well for the both of you to interact with.

  • Take some “me” time

This is so important for us SAHMs! We are with our children all day long that we typically forget to take some time for ourselves! When your husband gets home from work, try to have him take over for a bit. Go take a nice long kid-free shower or better yet a bubble bath! Go for a walk outside by yourself. See if a friend wants to meet you for a drink! Do something for you! You deserve it 😉

  • Take your child for a walk

This is a great way to beat those SAHM blues! Take your child for a walk around the neighborhood or go to a trail. Just getting outside can help those blues!

  • Exercise

This is an excellent way to get rid of those SAHM blues! Exercising not only increases your endorphins which can lift your mood but it also gets you into better shape (keeping up with those little ones is not easy)! You choose the workout that is right for you. I personally love yoga! It gets me into shape, increases my flexibility, and relaxes me when I feel stressed.

  • Enroll your child in activities

This one may depend on your financial situation since this option costs money. This is a way for you to meet other moms, get out of the house, and keep your little one occupied. See what your area has to offer. Some good activities are music classes, gymnastics, youth sports, and dance.

I love essential oils!!! doTERRA has so many oils that help relieve stress (lavender, serenity, balance, and elevation to name a few). You can diffuse these through your house for a mood boost or apply topically. If you have any questions about any of the amazing oils offered by doTERRA, please don’t hesitate to comment or email me for more information! For some information on some of these oils please read how-im-replacing-my-medicine-cabinet-with-essential-oils-part-1 and How I’m Replacig My Medicine Cabinet With Essential Oils-Part 2.

This is so true. Being a SAHM is not just staying at home. I can leave you feeling very alone and just like you said – isolated. I found that staying busy and active has been key to beating those SAHM Blues… thanks so much for sharing such a great post with us at Turn It Up Tuesday!

Totally agree with you!!! great list.. I worked for 10 years and after having my second baby we decided that SAH will be best for all, but it was so much for me that I had to go back to work after 6 months of being at home. I just had a part time job now, but it help me relieve some of the pressure of being at home the entire day.. Thanks for sharing with #Alittlebitofeverything

When I had my first, I was the same way! I stayed home for a few months but then wanted to go back to work. I liked the mom/work balance. Then with my 2nd I wanted to stay home. I love being a SAHM now. Thank you so much for commenting!
